Reasons why Yoga and Cycling are a perfect match!

benefits of yoga cycling and yoga Apr 28, 2022

Keen cyclists are mentally strong people, very determined and goal-oriented.  Cycling gives me the opportunity to get out in nature with the wind on my face and the feeling of being free to ride but hours of cycling can lead to tight hip flexors and lower back issues.  In May 2021 I completed a 500 mile Cycle Ride for Mental Health and Yoga became a huge part of my training.  Here, we are going to look at the benefits that you can expect from incorporating Yoga into your cycling training programme.

Increased flexibility

Yoga and flexibility go together but many people often cite a lack of flexibility as a reason not to practice yoga. But if you are feeling a little stiff and struggle to touch your toes, then starting to practice regularly may be exactly what you need.

Yoga provides many valuable physical and mental benefits and it is the perfect match for diehard athletes like cyclists.  Athletes tend to have a strong and tight musculature and it is hard to get it to stretch well with a couple of regular exercises.  When practicing Yoga those tight muscles will warm up quickly and profoundly that it will be easier to get the stretching that will make a difference in your musculature and overall performance when you are on your bike.

Strengthen your body

Besides the benefit of additional flexibility in your muscles, joints, and back, Yoga also helps significantly in your mental stamina and endurance.  The act of holding and maintaining poses is a great way to build and strengthen your muscles, particularly in the core, arms and upper legs.

 Improve your joint health

While cycling is less stressful on your joints compared to other forms of exercise, such as running, you’re still bound to feel the effects of a hard ride in your knees and other areas. If this sounds like you, then Yoga will certainly help.

Keep a calm mind

In addition to the mental stamina and endurance you will acquire, Yoga has immense physiological benefits that will translate also in a better physical performance of your body overall and the quality of your daily life.  It gives your mind a complete workout as well as your body, incorporating unique breathing techniques to help you stay calm and focus the mind.

Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, Yoga is the perfect partner to your bike. Stretching isn’t just something you have to do for five minutes before your workout; Yoga takes it to the next level by giving you benefits all over your body. So, whether you plan to practice in your off-season, or take to the mat two or three times a week, we guarantee that you’ll have found your next passion.
